Professional Development

This year, for the first time, the Guyanan Teachers’ Union, in collaboration with our sister union, “The Canadian Teachers’ Federation”, will be holding two (2) separate two (2) week workshop in Region #1 (North West District), which includes Mabaruma and Region #8 (Potaro Siparuni) which includes Potaro and Madhia.

This relationship has been in existence for over fifty (50) years. Tutors are sent from the Canadian Teachers Federation to assist our teachers with the teaching of different subject areas. These tutors are complimented with co-tutors from Guyana. It is a kind of teaching/learning process for all and the workshops will be held from Monday, 14th July, 2008, to Friday, 25th July, 2008, simultaneously, in each region.

For this year, the subjects that will be dealt with will be Mathematics, Language, with emphasis on Reading, Science and School Administration. About one hundred and eighty (180) teachers and Administrators are expected to attend each Workshop. The teachers are brought to one (1) location, in their respect Regions and are kept there for the entire duration of the workshop. The Guyana Teachers’ Union, with assistance from the Canadian Teachers Federation and the Regional Administration, is responsible for the teachers’ traveling to, accommodation and meals during the workshop. The workshop in region #1 will be held in Mabaruma, while Paramakatoi will be the location for the workshop in region #8.

At the end of the workshops, those teachers who qualify are issued with certificates, which can be used later on, for credits.

Sports and Games

The Guyana Teachers’ union held the Ministry of Education/Guyana Teachers’ Union Schools Annual National Track and Field, Swimming and Cycling Championships form Tuesday, 13th November, 2007, to Friday, 16th November, 2007, in Georgetown.

The track and field and cycling events were held, for the first time, at the Cricket Stadium, Providence, East Bank Demerara, while the Swimming Championships were held at the Castelani Pool, Homestretch Avenue, Georgetown. View the Results.

Guyana Teachers’ Union’s Conference

The first Biennial Delegates Conference of the Guyana Teachers’ Union will be held from Tuesday, 1st April, 2008, to Friday, 4th April, 2008, at the Guyana Teachers’ Union Hall, Georgetown. The formal Opening Ceremony will be held at the National Cultural Centre, Homestrech Avenue. Over one hundred and twenty (120) Delegates, from thirty-eight (38) Branches and Sections of the Guyana Teachers’ Union, are expected to attend. The Theme for the Conference is “Quality Education Throught Genuine Partnership for Sustainable Development”. Formerly, the Guyana Teachers Union held Annual Conferences.

The G.T.U/C.T.F. Upgrading Programme

The Guyana Teachers’ Union and the Canadian Teachers’ Federation will be holding their Annual Upgrading Programme in Paramakatoi, Region #8. This relationship, between the Guyana Teachers' Union and Canadian Teachers' Federation, has been in existence for over forty-five (45) years and was the brainchild of a former General Secretary and President, Bro. Basil B. Blair, A.A.

The Programme is aimed to improve the professional and academic skills of the teachers in the host Region. Four (4) tutors from the Canadian Teachers' Federation and four (4) co-tutors from the Guyana Teachers' Union are used as the facilitators for the subject areas which are, in this instance: a. Mathematics, b. Language (with emphasis on reading), c. Science, and d. Administration.

The Programme is scheduled to commence on Monday, 16th July, 2007 and conclude on Friday, 27th July, 2007. It is expected that about one hundred and sixty-two (162) teachers will be in attendance. At the end of the Programme, certificates will be issued to the participants based on their regularity and punctuality and also on their contributions during the sessions.
